I have been diagnosed with GERD but have mostly LPR symptoms: sour taste, cough, tight throat, voice issues. No heartburn.
I have noticed that when I have an upset "stomach" (maybe "bowel" is the better term) and I get diarrhea that really cleans out my bowel, my GERD/LPR symptoms are much better for that day.
This most recently happened after my barium swallow study, I had upset bowel after lunch and had 4-5 very watery bowel movements within a couple hours time. Following that and later that day, the bitter taste really wasn't there and by nighttime, my voice was strong as it used to be before this LPR/GERD stuff.
When my bowel is normal, I get sour bitter taste a few minutes after eating, and it tends to persist most of the day until I eat or drink. Then it comes back. Voice tends to be on the weak side especially after meals, cough occasionally.
I read another person's post on this site who said that their gerd was helped by a motility treatment. However their symptoms only came up hours after eating, which was key in her diagnosis and is very different from my symptom pattern.
So on one hand I have noticed the relationship, on the other hand it makes sense that if the bowel is clearing out, the "system" is not functioning normally which affects the stomach, and it doesn't necessarily mean that there's anything wrong with the bowel system when it's functioning normally. And when it's functioning normally, the stomach is in a certain state that produces GERD/LPR symptoms.
So has anyone else noticed a similar relationship with bowel and GERD/LPR? I see an ENT next Friday and will also ask him and post back here.
