I had a Nissen fundoplication three and a half years ago, and am very glad I did.  My lungs were reacting very badly to reflux, and I needed the surgery to try and heal my lungs.  Thankfully it worked, and my lungs responded very well.  I only wish I'd had the surgery done much earlier, but I had been scared by all the frightful posts on the internet.

My surgery did the trick and my lungs improved 100%.  It took about two and a half months for them to heal.  My lungs were very unhealthy for over 5 years, and the surgery was a necessity.  I'm so thankful I finally had the courage to go forward, and just wish I hadn't waited so long.
