Had an interesting experience this morning.. right after waking up, in that sort of hazy daze, I wasn't aware of any symptom. As I became more awake, I felt the sour fluid being generated in my mouth.
Though I already know the sour taste is a symptom (and not reflux itself), this was interesting because it's very similar to "pain". Like I had pain from an ingrown toenail a few days ago that I managed to sleep through, but once I came to, was noticeable again.
So when I am out (or not fully "in"), my experience of pain is altered. What my body experiences as pain, whether it be from reflux, or from the surgery, is triggered when there is enough activity/consciousness to notice it. I don't know how it works. But for now, I'm thinking it's a good sign that others experience sour taste after fundoplication also. And that, I am not waking up with the sour taste.. so, I think my body is responding less to the pain than when I would wake up with the sour taste already present.
I've mentioned it elsewhere in this thread I'm sure, but in one of the journal articles I've read about
refractory GERD, when people have a sour taste with a "normal" PH study, one of the diagnoses is esophageal hypersensitivity. Treatable with what's described as a visceral pain modulator -- i.e., Elavil, or maybe an SSRI anti depressant. Of course I tried that, and it didn't work, but if the sour taste I'm having endures, I'll give Elavil another try now that I know that reflux has been ruled out. Anyways, this experience this morning, where my sour taste symptom appeared before my eyes as I came out of sleep, has reinforced my thinking that the body's response to pain (whatever the cause: reflux being a major one) may be a significant factor in the symptoms that plague many of us.
In other news, I also received the Explanation of Benefits from my health insurance company. The total billed was $70k. The contracted amount between my insurance company and the hospital was $4300. So There was $66k listed as "amount not allowed". I almost freaked, and called my insurance company. They explained that the hospital can bill whatever they want, but the insurance company is contracted with them to only pay that $4300. The $66k they said would be written off by the hospital.
In terms of man hours and supplies, $4300 seems about
right, for the surgery. 4 doctors for 2 hours, 1 doctor for another hour, .25 of a nurse for 16 hours. Yes, miscellaneous other staff.. but not $60k+ worth. How they arrived at $70k is beyond me, I should request the itemization just for curiosity's sake.
