bloating/flatulence after nissen...how bad?

Hey everyone,

I'm thinking about having the nissen done but I'm still trying to decide. I have voice issues from GERD that haven't gone away with 60mg of dexilant daily. The biggest thing I'm worried about is the bloating/gas that I've heard about. I'm just wondering if anyone knows the frequency of this over the long-term in people who have had the nissen? Also, just how bad is it? Is this something that is just a minor annoyance, or something that is usually a huge issue which you can't really control? Thanks.

It really varies a lot from person to person. I have has 3 of them and the gas and such was pretty much the same with each.
I did have gas with bloating for about a month. The bloating really didn't bother me and I believe some of it may have been the swelling inside. The gas how ever was different. That was about a 5 to 6 month deal, but was getting gradually better as time went on.
Remember that gerdies swallow way more than normal people and therefore swallow more air. After the nissen it is harder to burp the air out, especially early in recovery.

After things are fully healed both usually go away for the most part. After the recovery it depends on what you eat.

Some people use gas-x during recovery and have good results. It's best to stay away from carbonated beverages and food that is known for producing gas as well.
