It's official-- The scheduling department of the hospital called and has me schduled for my Nissen on August 28th at 7:30 am-- first surgery of the day. I wanted to have my surgery sooner, but my schedule and my doctor's schedule conflict throughout the summer. Notwithstanding, I am relieved to know that a date has been set and I am moving forward with the surgery. I work from home i.e. telecommute. I'm an online professor for a regional college. Question: Is it possible that 4 days after my surgery I will be able to use a laptop and engage in simple grading? Some people take 1 to 2 weeks off work, but these are usually people whose jobs involve more physical work. Some people work from a desk, but in my case I can recline on a couch and still complete work. How lethargic and energy depleted where those of you who had the surgery?-- What type of shape were you in 4 days after your surgery?

I am 64 years old and I had my Nissen 2 years ago this past April. I was about 4-5 days past surgery that I was able to sit in my recliner and use my laptop. I could not stay on it very long but, I was able to use it. I do not know your age but I am sure if you are relatively young and healthy, you will have no problem with time on the laptop to do simple grading. Good luck with your surgery. Please continue to lean on this group for answers to any questions you have...

Sandi-- I'm 48 and exercise regularly. Thanks for your feedback concerning your post surgery days. I feel better having read your response.

Ian-

Since you work from home give yourself at least a good week, You will get tired and I mean flat out tired fast for a few weeks. This is still major surgery and you will not be getting your usual amount of calories for a few weeks at least.

I'm 35, exercise regularly, and even the next day you should be able to use a laptop. 4 days is no problem.

Hi Ian,

Congratulations on your surgery date! 

I used my laptop right away (I think the next day) to communicate with the substitute teacher in my classroom, and my friends here on the forum.  You'll probably take more breaks than usual, but you should be able to start work from home fairly quickly.

Denise-- That's good news-- being able to return to work sooner rathern than later. Because my surgery date is still several months away. I will focus on exercise. And I do intend to keep in contact with members of this forum. I'll need their feedback and encouragement. Thanks.

It makes a difference what your age is, how extensive the surgery is and if you have help in the house.

I'm past retirement, had a really large hernia and extensive surgery to get my stomach out of my chest. I was in the hospital for 4 days. I had home health care come check on me for a couple of weeks. I have hardly any help most of the time. I couldn't sit up the first 2 days, got to the bathroom after that, needed pain meds for months. I couldn't drive for a month. I wouldn't have wanted to read and grade papers for a couple of weeks.

I prepared liquids and soft foods and froze them well ahead of surgery. If you plan ahead so you don't have to go shopping, maybe have all bills automatically paid, get ahead of stuff like that, you can concentrate on just taking meds on time and eating every hour or two for a few days.

Alcie- At 48, I'm hoping that my age isn't too much of a negative factor- thus my effort to engage in vigorous daily exercise. I will have both my wife and mother-in-law helping me during the recovery phase. My goal is to pace myself and engage in daily walks during the recovery period-- nothing aggressive or straining.
