What an awful experience that was!!!! I am in England so no nice treatment. They said it would be better without a sedative. So, I agreed. I heaved, threw up, and generally had a bad time of it. So glad its over!!! Anyway they found a bad hiatal hernia, so its an op or an increase in tablets. Already on 45mgs of prevacid (zoton) and thats stopped working. Need a bit of sympathy. Vanessa

You have my sympathy Vanessa. I'm also sorry that you had to go through that. I can not believe that those people wouldn't give you a sedative, not even something to control your gag reflexes. They said that it was better without one??? Surely, they have seen people with prior experiences like yours and would have known.

I'm also sorry about the hiatal hernia. My mom has one and just to let you know she did increase her meds when she was dx'd but she is doing fine. (I ask her all the time) So whatever choice you make to treat/control it, you will be just fine. My thoughts are with you. :)

Thank you dbab. Your sympathy is much appreciated. Do you think it is a high dose of prevacid I am taking compared to other people, if they increase mine I will be taking 60 mgs. Does that seem alot? Vanessa

I think that would be okay (but you would want to check with your doctor). I'm on 30mg/day of Prevacid and have had to increase to 60mg for about 2 weeks when my duodenal ulcer was getting bad and I didn't have a problem with it. If you are having reservations about it though, you might want to sit down and weigh the options of medication and surgery. Without either, you run the risk of esophagal cancer. I've said this on the forum before, I don't mind taking this medicine for the rest of my life if it means a longer life. Take care :)

Oh Vanessa ........your proceedure sounds just horrible that you had to go through.  I live in Michigan and don't even remember my scope as they were so wonderful to me and I was not only given a seditive, but something to numb my throat and for gagging and was put in twilight.  I am so sorry that you had to go through such a horrible experience.  I hope your doctor does what is best for you and do keep us posted.  "Hugs"    Debi  :-)

Thank you so much Debi and Searchin for your kind comments. I am feeling better now but struggling to sleep because I keep reliving the experience. In England they just want us out of the hospitals as soon as possible, so we get bad treatment. Debi i`m glad to hear you are feeling better now and have sorted out your meds. You are so lucky living in America. My husband and I visit Las vegas regularly, we wish we lived there. We are coming over for 2 weeks at the end of August. Can`t wait!!!Vanessa

Hi Vanessa.......How are you doing???  And how are things going for you since your scope???  Have you been back to the doctor and have they decided yet on what to do for you.  (increase medicine or do surgery?)  Do keep us posted on how things are going for you.  Please!!!  I have been thinking about you alot lately and just had to write to see how you are.

Hi Debi, nice to hear from you. I am feeling better and have recovered from that horrible experience. Not had formal results from G.P. yet. They are very slow over here. I think it will be my choice as to surgery or increase meds. Even though I am on quite a high dose of meds. 45 mgs of prevacid (zoton) I am still coughing badly in the night cos of the acid getting into my lungs. This worries me. Always have a frog in the throat. Will let you know when I get the results. Hope you are doing o.k. Vanessa

Well I know what you went through with the endoscope! Im from Leeds in the UK and have had two endoscopies done! The last one I really thought I was going to die, I could barely breath, I remember them saying "relax Mr Parker" as I lunged at the attending Doctor! In some cases they like to rely on the natural peristalsis that takes place when swallowing, thats why they like you alert and not sedated. Although my first endo was ok I was sedated and cant really remember it!

Anyhow drop me a quick email if you wanna chat! I may have a diet that might work for you!

I have to go for surgery some time this year, but as you well know here in the UK the waiting lists are long!!

I'm sorry you had to exp the Endo w/o a sedative. I had one done about 6 mo ago without any problems, but with a sedative. I suggested to my Dr. that i'm nervous about the sedative and wanted to have the procedure without it. Well, he indicated less get you sedated and before I knew it, the procedure was over. Biopsy revealed H pylori, so I was taking 60mg Prevacid for 2 wks. I am currently taking 30mg a day. I sometimes still have problems. It seems like switching meds sometimes helps. Diagnosed with GERD approx. 5 yrs. ago.

I hope you are feeling a lot better soon.

Hi W. thanks for the reply. Where do you live? In England we aren`t so lucky. What problems are you still having? I`m waiting for my results from the biopsy. Have been on 45mgms prevacid for 2 months and still suffering. Don`t know what they will do next. Vanessa

I am in the USA. I'm sorry you are having such a difficult time. I am experiencing a lot of general stomach discomfort;bloating and crampy type feelings. I can't hardly stand for anything to touch my stomach. I was DX with H-Pylori in Jan 2005, which is a bacteria lining of the stomach. This sometimes brings on reflux or reflux sometimes brings this on. Basically, just a mess! I was also DX on last week w/Fibromyalgia, so these could be some of the reasons why i'm starting to have a problem. It seems like it was under control at one time or another, but had to switch meds a couple of times when they appeared to stop working. I will start prolisec tomorrow(40mg), and will see my GI in 2 wks.

Vanessa, hopefully your biopsy results will guide the Dr. to help you out and relieve you of the distress you're having. I know the suffering isn't an easy thing to deal with. I have tried apple cider vinegar in the past (1 teasp)w/a cup of warm water, I have also tried raw honey(1 teasp), and papain enzymes(chewable tab), and slices of granny apples without the peeling. All of these things have helped me on occasion. But, please check with your Dr prior too trying anything outside of your prescribed Dr's order; particularly with a Hiatal Hernia.

I hope you feel better soon! Please keep up posted with your biopsy results. I will keep you in my prayers..

Thanks for the replies Vanessa and Marxxx. Vanessa it seems like you are having a bad time at the moment. What is fybromalgia. I`me not sure. I also suffer with IBS so Iget the bloating and cramps etc. because of that. I will try some of your remedies. Did you read Dr. Normans post and his website, its quite interesting. I have e-mailed him. Still waiting for biopsy results. Vanessa

Yes, I am having a bad time at this moment, but will remain spiritually hopeful. Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain & fatigue disorder. I started experiencing symptoms about 7 mo. ago, and this is also around the time that my reflux started acting out. The body has a funny one of letting you know when something's out of wack. Well, Fibro is one of the disorders where the Dr's don't know why it really exists or have a cure. Seems like a lot of us are hypersensitive to pain, and the body doesn't rest (sleep) properly, possibly causing fatigue and ultimately pain, or vice versa. I am getting along a lot better now that the Dr's have put a name on my symptoms;body aches and pains basically all over,particularly, arms & legs, neck and shoulders. I am now on Zoloft of one week, and it's helping me a lot.

I am determined through the Grace of God to beat this war. I will not just lie down and be still.

Vanessa, I have not read Dr. Norman's post or visited the website, but I will. Thank You, and I hope you are feeling better. Hang in there, also, exercise if you can;walk if nothing more....It truly makes a difference, and, drink plenty of water. Talk with you soon!

Hi Vanessa. Sorry didn`t reply sooner been on a holiday from hell for a week. It sounds like an awful thing to have, this disease. Glad you seem to have sorted your meds out now. My acid wasn`t as bad as usual while i was on hol. Don`t know why. Didn`t take my night time med some of the time and was ok. Vanessa

Dear People,

I to have gerd.My stomach bothers me all the time.I get heartburn & diarrha & stomach discomfort.I feel sick all the time.I never had the upper GI.I know i couldn't handle that.I had pills but they didn't help.They only made sicker.I try to avoid spicy foods.but i still feel bad.Also my knees swell up.Off & on.I feel terrible & i'm only 40.Anybody expercising the same thing?Write about it.

I didn't think I could handle all that either! However, I was in some real pain, so I had a barium swallow, which is not as long and involved as the Upper GI, yet shows them from the first swallow, down to the small intestine. I've had the endoscopy twice and both times, the worst thing was the spray that they use to numb your throat so that the tube can go down more easily. I slept through the whole procedure. :)

Re your knees? I'm definitely no expert - just someone who has happened to have a lot happen to her. :) But I think that the swelling of your knees may be due to something else entirely!

You need to be seen by a Dr. and let him/or her examine you so that they can figure out what is wrong, and work out a plan to help you!!

Vanessa, I'm sorry to hear about all that you've gone through with your tests! Hope you can find something to help. Have they tried you on Reglan? My husband has used this for many years and it has helped him - just a thought.

Hi Terri, thanks for the reply. I have never heard of reglan. Maybe its an American med with a different name over here. We have gaviscon that is an over the counter remedy. Doc just gave me that yesterday as an antacid to take inbetween the PPI`s. Vanessa
