Schatzki ring(acquired)

Last year I had my first endoscopy...dianosis, severe reflux and stricture which was dilated. Several months ago I had my second endoscopy and now have an acquired Schatzki ring. My question is
if I have been taking Nexium since last year and avoided trigger foods(trust me I avoid them because the pain isn't worth it) then why do I all of a sudden have a schatzki ring??? My GI doc didn't say anything about it, I noticed it on a copy of my results.

I don't think those rings are related to reflux. An elderly family member has them and they cause him bother as food gets stuck without warning (relieved by fizzy water). But he has been given no medication ever for these and I believe the treatment is surgical?
Digging around on the issue I did come across a paper and some mention of orange juice being a trigger of spasms, but I think like GERD it may be one of those things where it's individual.

Are you sure the ring hasn't been there longer, seeing as they didn't discuss it with you?

So the Schatzki ring is actually in the oesphagus?

Yes they are an abnormal ring of tissue, usually found in the elderly I thought. You can have more than one and eventually have some stricture, which they treat surgically. I'll see if I can find the report I read....

One study says in children it is associated with eosinophilic oesophagitis - have you been tested for that?

I think I'm wrong about the association with reflux - misremembered it cos the person in the family denies any reflux!!

Hi, thanks for your reply...I did not have a schatzki ring the first time I had an endoscopy done. It was found during my second endoscopy. I was tested for eosinophilic esophagitis, the lab report just said consistent with reflux, but didn't state how many eosinophils were found with the biopsy.

I"m just confused because if nexium is helping with heartburn,reflux, then how can my schatzki ring be cause by reflux???

In my own case for years I had occasional difficulty in swallowing and frequent massive heartburn and reflux.  They did an endoscope and and they diagnosed and treated a Schatzki Ring.  I was sedated  at the time but I started coming to during the proceedure and I vaguely recall they were forcing something down my throat and I was resisting.  So they put me farther under the sedation......afterward when the Doctor talked to me in his office he asked me what I thought he was doing and I told him "it felt like he was forcing a 2X4 down my throat."  He expalined about the "ring" and told me I might have to have it done every few years.  He also put me on Nexium for the heartburn and I was on it for 3-4 years.  It worked very well for the heartburn itself but it did nothing for the reflux.  They finally did a HH repair and an NF in March of this year and the difference is like night and day.  As far as the "ring" is concerned, the dialation of it worked very well and the only short term effect was an irritated throat which lasted a few hours.

I"m really glad surgery and dilation worked for you! :-)

dilation doesn't give me relief for very long. I really needed another one done probably 2 months after the last one was done. I just didn't get it because I haven't been able to pay off the bill from the last one. My GI doc also told me both times I"m not a candidate for surgery because it's a swallowing issue. ?? but I can swallow liquids and soft food just fine, other foods too as long as I have something to drink and then goes down to a certain point and then feel like it gets stuck,,, same goes for pills too. so I can see the muscles working to do the swallowing action and I *think* that because I can swallow until to the point where stuff gets stuck it's not a swallowing issue but the stricture and schatzki ring causing things to get stuck and have to figure out why these keep forming. cry

I have one but its not severe.

I was on nexium for almost seven years but it caused benign stomach polyps to develop. The went away after I stopped them for the surgery.

Its going on four years since the surgery.
