Hi ,

Can anyone tell me if there is a difference between acid reflux and acid reflux disease ? Are they both caused by a weak sphincter ?
I see all these diets and supplements to cure acid reflux and acid reflux disease. I thought that if they are both caused by a weak sphincter then surely there is no cure other than getting the sphincter tightened through an operation.

The reason for me asking is my consultant says that I definitely have acid reflux but doesn't think that me having the Linx fitted would help even though I had a high demeester score (33.9). I definitely have acid rising to my throat and mouth as my throat often burns and my tongue is white and sometimes tingles and burns. The consultant seems to think that me swallowing too much air is causing pressure which then causes the acid reflux if this were correct then surely the sphincter must still be weak for allowing this to happen. On my Manometry test the sphincter pressure was within the permitted levels so didn't appear to be weak.
Any ideas anyone

Did they say on your PH study what percentage was gas reflux? You do have a high demeester score. A peptest which you can pay for privately in the UK (spit in some saliva tubes) will show if you have pepsin in your mouth - pepsin is only found in your stomach, so if the sample is positive you are having LPR - silent reflux.
If your consultant suspects that gas is the issue then has he put you on a motility agent such as domperidone to see if that helps?
You also have to remember that a manometry is just a snapshot of 30 mins of your day, I can guarantee you that if you had 3 done over 3 separate days you would get 3 different results.
Has your consultant offered you any alternatives?

Hi, GC1pink ,

I had a 24 hour impedance test it doesn't mention anything about gas. It does say there were 65 acidic and non acidic events of which 44 reached the proximal oesophagus
131 episodes of belching - 105 of which were associated acidic and non acidic.
I'm sure I have Gord as I also get heartburn but it also affects my throat, mouth sometimes my nose and I think my ears.
I am in the UK and did get the pepsin test tubes a few weeks ago but I never did the test.
