Coming off PPIs?

I just had my first full day without taking any PPIs. Prior to my surgery, I had been taking PPIs for nearly 18 years. I've had a little bit of an upset stomach. My surgeon said that if I have any problems that I should take Zantac or some other H2 blocker.

What have other peoples' experiences been like coming off PPIs? Is the upset stomach a short-term thing? What can I expect if anything?

Hello Ian,

The first thing my surgeon told me when I saw him after waking up is, "Stop your meds permanently". Since then, I haven't needed them at all. If I had any upset stomach coming off of them it was likely while I was in the hospital and mostly medicated anyway so I likely didn't notice!

Some people say Gaviscon has worked for them when they have periodic flare-ups.

Once again Tony is right on the money!

I stopped taking mine the day before surgery and have only taken pepto and gaviscon for any other problems.

I only need to take them now if I have too much dairy, or too much fat in my diet. I could control it without meds, but sometimes I just cant turn down certain foods.

Thanks for the feedback. My stomach will adapt. I think I'll be okay.
