Hi Everyone,

Just another question to ask to those who have had the wrap. I got a bad case of the hick-ups today and I was wondering what happens when you get them after the wrap. The Hick-up is a Diaphram spasm, if I'm not mistaken, and wouldn't this put a lot of stress on the wrap? I have a pretty violent hick-up that I cannot control normally, other than anticipating the spasm and opening my mouth to relieve the pus/pull feeling when I hick-up.

I'm also getting ready for my first 'no-med' pH testing and motility test. I'm dreading the thought that I may have intense reflux for 5 days straight. The Lab office told me that I should eat all my triggers and really get the reflux going... For those who have don this, do you look to cause the irritation only on the day of the 24 test, or should I be doing it all 5 days?

Hi Stockster,

When preparing for the PPI-free PH test, most GI docs/surgeons allow you to be on Ranitidine (Zantac) and antacids for much of that week.  You should get paperwork with specific directions about when you have to be free of ALL anti acid meds/OTC products.

You are going to want to baby your stomach during your prep and do your best to keep things as calm as you can.  On the day/24hrs you have the test, it is a good idea to challenge your reflux, so you get a result that shows the difficulties you're having.

Unfortunately, many of us find that our reflux calms down on the day of the test!  It's maddening!  Hopefully yours will be a more representative reflux day!

And the hiccup question...Yes, diaphragm irritation is a major cause of hiccups, and some people get them during recovery.  They are definitely uncomfortable during early recover.  Fortunately they don't last long, and become less frequent as recovery progresses. 

I know why you ask about their affect on the wrap, but I've never heard members here mention their doctors having any concerns over their hiccups.  They can be painful, but from what I've seen here on the forum, it doesn't seem to be an area of concern for surgeons.  It would be a good question to ask, though.  If you do, let us know what they say.

My doc gave me some medication for my hiccups after surgery, it worked really well. Chlorpromazine is what its called. The hiccups are pretty painful at first but mine have all but gone away. I notice I get them when I eat too much or too fast.
