Hi ranger. Welcome to the forum.
It's pretty awful that insurances are refusing to pay for Nexium and other medicines that we take regularly. Not only that, but the drug companies have jumped their prices tenfold, so we can't afford them out of pocket.
My PCP says that the OTC stomach meds, while not exactly the same, are mostly half doses. Just doubling up though should be your physician's call. Look in your insurance's formulary for a generic PPI that is covered. My formulary doesn't have anything that works for me at all, but I might be able to afford a generic.
Another solution is to back to something like Zantac, which works differently, but does work for a lot of people. Some of these may be in the formulary.
Meantime, we should all be complaining to our state and federal legislators about the situation.
