I know there is no cure all for most of us except surgery. How much damage is actually caused by the PPIs and if people have got off then without surgery how is life after them. I always have just relied on them, never really dieted. I suffer from hietus hernial and gastritis. I avoid triggers but does it really matter since I still take ppi and have a hernia. If I went on koufman or a super strict diet would it cure it or just come back later from the hernia acting up or rebound from ppi. Just wondering if it's worth it or just saying hell with it and get surgery so I can finally be off of the PPIs.

The questions you are asking are what I was asking myself in 2006. I had 3 choices, double an already double dose of PPIs, stop all meds and deal with it, or go for the surgery. My GI recommended the surgery as my symptoms were no longer being controlled with meds and diet and I had developed Barretts.

I also had a very weak LES, so I opted for the Surgery. I chose the nissen because it was what I felt the most reliable at the time. There are a few more choices available now and if you decide on surgery that is a decision only you can make.

If you do opt for surgery be sure to get the tests done to be sure you are a good candidate. A manometry is a very important test to have before surgery.

Thanks Bill, yeah been really thinking about surgery but would at least have to wait till the end of this year because of insurance reasons. But I'm worried about missing a lot of work or lifting something at work and ruining my recovery. It's a scary thought plus my wife doesn't really want me to get it since I could get infections. But I'd do anything to get off these stupid pills and have no gerd.
