Hi
Background: LPR causing vocal and respiratory stress and good deal of pain.
Hiatal Hernia found after the usual Run-a-round at the doctor market. LES pressure was nonexitent. Hate drugs so took the plunge and went under the knife.
Here is my exp:
*Admission one day befor they gave me anticoagulant
*Rolled me into OR next day wearing ridiculous anti-embolism stockings to prevent clots in legs from laying so long
*As Per My Doc: they went in with the Laparoscope, my liver was above average in size, bleeding ensued , so they had to cut me open to do what they had to do.
* Woke up in recovery unaware the i had spent 7 hours under instead of the 3 Doc promised.
* One naso-gasric tube going down my nose into tummy, one folley cath up my whatever, two cannula one in each arm two J-vac packs with tubes going into the far reaches of my abdominal cavity and secured with stitches to my abdomen to drain blood and fluid,
* Was taken to room where Doc removed the naso-gastric and the folley cath...relief!! at least movement was easier.
*First night was like nightmare on elm street..wanted to sleep but could"nt.
*Things improved over my 5 day stay at Hosp.
PAIN FACTOR:
*Incision site. stitches along the skin and under along muscles. painful and Tight. First 24 hrs pain was severe then eased alot after that with exception to the tightness which remained
* Second pain factor came from the bloating which is expected after OPs. The sooner u fart after OPs the luckier u are. For me that came after 12-14 hours. My abdomine swelled and the pressure below the sutures was escalating by the nano-second..thats when my backyard was poked with fleet enema &Cos.
MEDICATION THEY GAVE ME AT HOSP.
*ANTIBIOTICS-ANTIEMMETICS(prevent vomiting) -ANALGESICS(for pain)-ANTIREFLUX(just in case)-DEXTROSE( just for the 12 hour fast post op)
MEDICATION FOR HOME
ANTIEMMETICS(prevent vomiting) -ANALGESICS(for pain)
DRESSING:Steristrips on sutures then covered with bandages.
Doc removed bandages before i was discharged but told me not to touch steristrips until they fall off. Shower with extra care.
Ask ur Doc for cosmetic sutures in case he had to open
THINGS TO WATCH OUT FOR
*If you have any back problems telll!!
i have back scoliosis which i did'nt mention to my Doc. so, when they put me in recovery room post op in a half sitting up or half reclining position they did not take the extra care to support my back properly..2 hrs like that. when i got to room back felt worse that Operation site.
* If u are on any medication not related to this type of surgery tell. i am on Prozac and didn't tell and could'nt take my dose for 5 days.
*Walk as soon as u can it helps with the wound tightness and bloating.
*If you had to undergo open surgery like me and are going to stay at the hospital for some time then BEWARE OF THEIR KILLER DIET!!..
i was given salty cream soup and jelly and custard..empty-calorie-gas-inducing food
mom came in the 3rd,4th, and 5th day with well strained veggie soup , ginger tea with anise and probiotic yoghurt..made a huge difference with gas passing.
OUTCOME:
*It has only been 8 days since surgery so too soon to assess fairly
*Internal swelling and slight edema cause discomfort not pain.
*Bloating and intestinal motility.i can literally feel the food and gas pockets promenading along my gut. walk, take probiotic yoghurt and warm ginger ,anise, fennel teas
*Swallowing issues. Still on a semi-liquid diet. Things back up or well a little in my pharynx and upper esophagus.. sometimes i do feel a very slight burning in the throat when that happens but nowhere near pre-op lpr symptoms Its bearable. i believe it to be the swelling and edema in my digestive tract It will take its time for things to function normally.
*Occasional minor cramping pain around the diaphragm area when i take in a deep breath. hiatus is newly stitched. Bearable.
*Tension in abdomine causing sleep difficulty cause of supine position. Put lottts of different size pillows in bed
WISHING EVERYONE WELL
**********************THE END********************.
