I am so frustrated. I'm 33 yrs old and I have really bad herd and Barretts esophagus. My gi Dr suggested I have surgery and sent me for all the tests. Came back that I ha e acid reflux 299 times in a 24 hrs period, and my gi Dr referred me for surgery to get my hospital hernia fixed and to get surgery for acid reflux. The surgeon walks in to the appointment and says you need to diet and exercise and take turns. There's nothing I can do for you because u are overweight but not overweight enough for a gastric bypass. I'm so frustrated because I'm always in pain and I don't know what to do. I was so looking forward to feeling better just to be told I'm screwed? He didn't even know my history and didn't care to find out. What do I do now? My gi Dr had me on the strongest acid prohibitor pills and they don't work.

Welcome to Healing Well.

I'd get a 2nd opinion. It's clear your GI believes the surgery is your best option and a lot of GIs don't like to send patients for it. Let your GI know what happened

Hi Squanto1980,

There is more that one surgeon out there, so do some research and see if you can find the best in your area. Depending on the size of the city you're in/near, you'll want one with lots of experience--300+ in a small city, and 1000+ in a large city.

As Bill said, if your GI doc referred you, you need the surgery, so don't give up. Sorry the surgeon was so rude to you. I suggest you report the behavior to your GI doctor, as he should know how his patient was treated.
