I was diagnosed with GERDs about two years ago, but am only now taking it seriously after having massive symptoms that were allergy like. I've been tested for all things allergic, even blood tested and am not allergic to anything. Often when I am having an acid reflux day and it has been building throughout the day I will eat that one trigger food that sends my whole system into a tail spin. I have excessive sneezing attacks (15-20 in a row), watery eyes, nausea and difficulty breathing when this happens. This will last about a min or so then slowly go away after about 10-15 min of coughing and blowing my nose. Also in the morning, if I've had foods on the no-no list (fried, fast food, alcohol) the night before, I will go through major coughing and nose blowing (half a box of tissue). I will suffer these symptoms for about 3-4 days. It's like it builds and builds then hits a threshold and bam, I'm having an attack!
Has anybody else suffered from this type of reaction to having an acid reflux flare up?

Welcome to Healing Well! You've come to the right place! Many here suffer with GERD, and some have had surgery to relieve those symptoms. I'm one of those. I do have asthma and allergies, but they were made much worse due to reflux. My lungs were in "life threatening" condition according to my PCP, who kept encouraging me to have the Nissen surgery. My GI doc wasn't as sure the surgery would help, but finally, after much prodding from my PCP, I had the surgery in 2009. It has made all the difference.

You didn't mention whether or not you're taking medication, and if so, what you're taking. Are you in the care of a GI doctor? With symptoms as severe and frequent as the ones you are describing, it sounds like it might be time to see what's going on and adjust meds if you're taking them.

Avoiding trigger foods is key. I know it's a bummer! Did you elevate the head of your bed (7-8 inches)? This is a very important thing to do, as it allows gravity to help keep the acid in your stomach. It sounds as if acid is migrating into your sinuses, which isn't a good thing.

Can anyone on here tell me how they were diagnosed with Gerd...like what was

it that showed you had Gerd.  my son has had nausea, vomiting weight loss since

grade 3/4...his weight upppp and dowwnnn....the last 1 anda half years he lost 70 lbs. off work

tired nausea,....vomiting....the doctors I don't think got it right on this one...he had all

tests blood...ultrasound...endoscopy, gastric emptying....all normal...so how does Gerd

show up ...because I was thinking he has gerd by reading other peoples stories...

we are due to go back to the specialist Tuesday to try a new med for cyclic vomiting..

well the gastric emptying was borderline once and very mild another time.

so he wakes up most mornings with nausea...sometimes mild stomach ache left center.

eats and throws up after eating quite a bit...nauscious a lot...fatique fatigue fatigue

this has been a long journey...but I am sure everyone on here has had there long journey.

by the way nothing like tums rolaids helps...any of those heartburn meds...we tried dexilant

for 10 days....but stopped....going to ask more questions from the specialist about that one.

I better right my questions down because I always for get something. confused

Thanks for the response. I did see a GI and that is how I was diagnosed. I took Prilosec for a while but my reflux was so frequent that I had to take it almost daily and it caused my stomach to cramp. I also prefer to stay away from medications. I have done some reading up on the disease and now have my bed raised up. I think the key for me right now is to be selective with my eating, which is sometimes difficult giving the way life goes at times. I've just now started to up my fiber and lower my fat intake. I eliminated cheese and milk for the most part, but am going to slowly put it back into my diet. At least, feta and goat cheese. If things still don't change I wonder if I should think about surgery, but that sounds drastic.

Hi bgirl1,

Your situation sounds more severe than Gerds. You may want to research Chron's Disease or IBS.
