I've read in several posts here that after a Fundo is done and before being discharged from the hospital, there is a 'swallow test". Can anyone describe this test? Is it like the barium swallow?

I had this test before being discharged and it was similar to a barium swallow in the sense they watch liquid going your throat while standing in front of a machine. The tech that administered my test explained it as the same as the barium swallow with the liquid being different so that if there is a leak at the wrap ,the liquid would evaporate/dissapate as opposed to the barium liquid which could leave a thicker more hardening liquid in any leaks area that might be found. The liquid I drank was yellow and tasted like powdered kool -aid. It was not the most pleasant tasting drink but I got through it. My results showed that things weren't going down very quickly so they had me walk around for 10 minutes and then stand in front of the machine to see if things had moved. Fortunately for me they did move into the stomach without getting stuck. Hearing things were moving slow made me somewhat apprehensive about trying things for fear of choking. It's been a week and I haven't had any problems with things getting stuck. Actually my recovery has been amazing. Nothing like what I had set myself up for.

Thanks Fundrider. I'm getting more apprehensive about tests and procedures now that I had a run in with the manometry. I thought the post op swallow test was only to find possible obstructions. Now I realize it makes visible any leaks around the wrap. It sounds pretty easy, like the barium swallow.

I'm happy to read about your positive experience with the procedure and hope you continue to recover quickly and without complications.

I did not have swallow test before being released from the hospital. I did not have any problems after the Fundo, it was the best decision I've ever made.

In spite of my increasing anxiety about the surgery, it's very clear that I have a large paraesophageal hernia crowding into my chest. It won't go away on its own and could cause a serious problem if it twists anytime in the future. I have a surgeon lined up who I'm told I'm lucky to have. I just want to finish all the tests so I can put the pieces together and make the most informed decision I can.

With a large para you really do need the surgery. I was so scared while I was waiting for my surgery because I could feel my stomach trying to flip when I was in bed at night. It took me 4 months to get all the appointments and the tests, but even with some tests that failed, not negative, just failed, my surgeon still said I needed the surgery.

I did have a barium swallow after surgery. It's a good idea, not invasive, makes sure there's no leakage.
