Reflux is a problem with my husband, he has collapsed at work at home, with severe chest pain and breathing difficulties and it is all down to reflux. He has been suffering with this for at least the past 3/4 years. Same symptoms, but only after the last couple of years reflux been diagnosed. He has had more episodes since his stress and anxiety levels have gone through the roof, with threats from his employer about his sickness, a bereavement last year, and his mother has now got to the stage of paliative care. We do not know his family history because he is adopted. He also is my carer, and holding down a full time stressful job. Would his Reflux and Psuedo gout issues be covered by the DDA?. We are talking to the GP Next week to try to sort things out. I think that his employers are about to make things even worse because of his sickness. He crawls into work somtimes, in pain and trys not to take time off. but unfortunately he has spent the last two incidents of the Reflux in A&E and spent 2 weeks in hopsital because of the Psuedo - gout can anyone point me in the right direction so we can be informed about what to discuss with GP, treatment, DDA etc. I am disabled and he is my carer so all of this worryies the hell out of me.

I'm sorry for your husband's discomfort/pain and problems.

Has he tried any natural remedies and avoidance strategies? For me, avoiding spices, onions, peppers and alcohol really improved things. Additionally, have him try some aloe, or licorice, probiotics and even ACV. All these are effective strategies to deal with reflux naturally and effectively, and most have helped me.

I'm so sorry for your troubles! Has it been determined yet if you husband is a candidate for surgical repair? Has he had a firm diagnosis from a qualified gastroenterologist? Stress and anxiety do make things much worse and he can't go on like that if he is to be fit enough to help you.

Buster1, I'm in the same boat and none of those remedies works as if a person has a hiatal hernia and uncontrolled reflux, NO remedy helps much and pain will take a person down quickly. I've tried it ALL with NO help from any of it. I'm glad it works for you, but some of us have more serious issues that need surgical repair.

Wraught, please encourage your husband to get a referral to a qualified surgeon to review his case. Has he had any of the tests for GERD?

We only found out about possible remedy of the problem very recently. He is waiting for a camera/investigation. The Consultant who treated my husband the last time he ended up in A & E, this was in York rather than our local Hospital Harrogate wrote to our GP and things have been referred to from then on. What I find appaling is that my husband has been suffering with this for years. sigh. Anyway the important thing is something is going to be done about it, just takes so much time. We have tried avoidance, diet etc. But stress and anxiety seem to be triggers. He has not had tests so far for GERD, although next week a visit to our GP is in order I think. TBH I am at my wits end with mother so ill, my husband constantly in some sort of pain and well me, I suffer from a chronic pain disability, I try so hard to be supportive to him. Hopefully things will get a bit better now we know what could be cuasing all of this. Im physically exhuasted.

I'm sure there will be help for your husband with the right doctors, and in turn, help for you too. You are in the right place on this forum as you will get a lot of support and valuable information from others that have 'been there'.

After my own 6 years of misery with GERD, I feel I'm on the verge of getting the go-ahead for surgical repair. So many have had so much success after getting a successful surgery that it is greatly encouraging. Reflux is the WORST PAIN I have ever had! People can't believe how much it steals from a person. Here, we ALL KNOW!

Please hang in there and visit these forums often for support. I know this forum has been a real 'lifeline' for me and still is.

Has your husband been put onto any medication to help? I know it doesn't always work, but it can ease things. Hopefully when he does finally get a proper diagnosis, he will start to get the proper treatment he needs. He may find he has to travel to see the right specialist - but for where you are - there's a fair few good hospitals around. Worrying and stress do make the symptoms worse, and it seems like that can't be avoided just now. I hope the GP gets things moving quickly - and finds something to help your husband in the mean time.
