In the past I'd get a tiny, sharp needle like pain under the base of my sternum. But it would go away quickly if I swallowed some saliva. I knew then that it was reflux. That was one of the first signs for me to start looking at my diet, and using tums. I haven't had it every day of my life. Years would go by when I wouldn't feel that. It would come and go, but most prevalent with oily foods and caffeine. I don't want to diagnose you in any way. Just describing my experience.
about 20 years ago, at a point of peak stress in my life (wedding coming up, work stress), a got a doozy of an anxiety attack (though I didn't know it was that at the time) one afternoon at work. I got a deep pain in the center of my chest, and started struggling to breathe regularly. The pain felt like I got punched in the sternum. I left work and headed for a local medi merge. By the time I got there the pain was gone. I got my BP and vitals checked, and the doc said it was stress. He referred me for more tests, and I came up clean. Never had one again, knock on wood. That was 22 years ago.
