So nervous about esophagus manometry

I'm having my esophagus manometry test done in a couple days and I'm getting so nervous and I have been thinking about canceling all day. I just want this nightmare to be over and I know this test is a step to that but I just worry I'm not going to be able to do it.

Any advice from anyone who has had it done would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Lawchick, I don't have this test done. I have the CT Scan instead. This test is more detail. Don't be nervous. My prayers to you. Keep us posted after.

I had mine 2 months ago and it was not as bad as I had expected. It's certainly not pleasant but you'll be fine. Just follow their directions and understand that they know what they're doing.

I've had it done, I really didn't think it was that big a deal, but then I've had 2 endoscopies without sedation so compared to that the manometry was a piece of cake.

The only test I really really hated was the 24 hour ph test with a tube up my nose and down my throat, made worse by the fact I was off PPIs as well, I felt like gagging the whole day and it was horrible.

I agree the thought is far worse than the test itself and its the 24 hour one that's the biggest pain in the backside.
I've had 3, take yourself to your happy place, follow the instructions re the no food policy and do exactly as they say and will be over before you know it. Good luck, try not to stress.

Also lawchick if at any time you don't feel comfortable just grab the tube and yank it out. At one point in felt like it was curling up in my esophagus and it was really uncomfortable but I just grabbed it and pulled it out. He was a bit miffed but did it again and it went in fine. The tube is really thin, only a few mm and goes down easily. It really is nothing to worry about, during the test I did some relaxation techniques where I relax my arms and legs and think of them and that way I stayed relaxed and it went very smoothly.

Thank you everyone for your replies, they really help make me feel better about all this. I have had the ENT put a tube down my nose into my throat to look at it, I wonder if this is similar to that? I will just try my best.

I was petrified of having the esophageal pH test, too, but it wasn't so bad as I had a great technician who took his time, explained the procedure and helped me relax while he inserted the probe. It doesn't hurt; just a bit of discomfort. The worst part was having to be OFF the Nexium for 2 weeks prior to the test.

This is a very important test that will tell your doctor a LOT about your acid reflux. Be sure to eat and drink trigger foods so that your test will be accurate. You must have this test for your doctor to determine if you are a candidate for surgery.

It's not the ph test this test is just to show swallowing pressure. I'm headed into Manhattan now for it and wow is it a terrible rainy day. I'm just hoping it goes by quick and easy but I'm still really nervous.

No I haven't had that one. What do you mean by rough? Do you have any suggestions?

I meant the manometry test you're having today. That one was the one that was a bit rough, but I got through it okay. Let us know how it goes.
