Hi I'm new to the chat world but here it goes. I'm having my second surgery for GERD in December and I have a vacation already paid for a week later. Has anyone ever done a flight so soon after the surgery? I had no issues that I remember 10 years ago when I had this done??

good question, look forward to opinions. in my case, we had a two week trip to Greece waiting, that had been planned, a year earlier. my surgery was unexpected, as i was asymptomatic for a long time, then it hit. our surgeon, was not to motivated to have us go,and personally i made the right choice not to, as this hiatal hernia surgery, is a hard recovery and no joke. look forward to hear others weigh in.

Well I'm still thinking the only good thing is that my sister and her roommate are both very experienced RN's in ER and Surgery so they think since I will be staying with them that I would have a good recovery. The flight would be what I dread. I did fly to Las Vegas from TN one week after an emergency hysterectomy and had no issues just used a wheel chair.

The flight is the bit that could be very dangerous, you're at high risk for blood clots after surgery anyway, so it means you are at an even higher risk of deep vein thrombosis.

Can you postpone the surgery until after your vacation? There is no way that I would travel that soon after surgery.

It's non refundable and I'm going to visit my sister who both her and her roommate are RN's and work at the Hosp with is just around the corner from their apartment. They are aware of my diet and they both are telling me to come so that i can recover with them so I will not be alone. I have been a widow for 15 years and they seen to think I would be better care with them?

It's not how you recover when you get there that would be the issue. It's the flight, it's dangerous, you are putting yourself a such a high risk for blood clots, and if one forms while tl on the plane, them being nurses isn't going to make a bit of difference. It sounds like you had already made up your mind to go regardless of what anyone on here said but it seems so dangerous.

Aside from that the airline can refuse to let you on so the decision may not be up to you. CAA regulations recommend at least 10 days after major abdominal surgery before flying.
