Unfortunately, when it comes to inflammation of the esophagus, unless one knows the exact root cause of the inflammation and how bad it is, no one can make an educated guess on how long it will take to heal.
The reason why doctors say 4 to 8 weeks because they are taught in medical school that 70 to 80% of people heal up during that time period. I'm very skeptical of those figures, but that is what they are taught.
Like any drug, Dexilant can have some pretty strong side effects. Dexilant gave me light headaches for a few days but after that I had no issues with it. The PPI drug that gave me the most problems was Prevacid, followed by Nexium.
While taking Dexilant might help in the short term, it's critical to find out what is causing the inflammation in the first place. So definitely stay away from Diet Pepsi (actually, eliminating all sodas would be a good idea).
A lot of people don't know this, but certain food additives can actually prolong the time it takes to heal the esophagus, such as MSG. Caffeine and alcohol should also be eliminated.
