Six months ago, I was diagnosed with gerd. For six months prior to the diagnosis, doctors thought I had asthma, upper respiratory infections, allergies, etc… Finally, I was sent to a GI specialist and after an endoscopy and PH level probe/monitor attached to my esophagus it was determined that I reflux all day, but to this point have no esophageal damage (thankfully)…I was placed on Nexim once a day (180mg per day)
I am in my thirties, an athlete and workout (cardio, weights, sports) 6 days a week…When I was diagnosed, I realized that I had to change my diet to avoid the gerd symptoms. At the time. I was 6 ft 182 lbs…and have maintained that weight for over 10 years.
I immediately changed my diet to avoid the standard “reflux foods”. But two months ago, after reading more about gerd and keeping tabs on this board, I decided to eliminate 50% of the sugar and carbs from my pre-gerd diet, but have maintained the same workout and training schedule.
I have dropped 12 pounds in two months. I feel healthy, occasionally experience the late night reflux, wheezing and coughing, but usually after I cheat and eat a spicy burrito or a chocolate dessert. But, I am a little concerned about the weight loss.
Are there any athletes out there with reflux? How can I keep up my training schedule without carbs, and still keep a healthy diet and keep the reflux symptoms away and maintain my weight?
Any dietary advice would be appreciated? Thanks.
