Failed Nissen - valvuloplasty next?

I had a full Nissen 18 months ago. It failed - more accurately it never worked to reduce acid, at all. My ph test results are the same as before a DeMeester score of 45.

I have been referred to a thoracic surgeon, a specialist for a valvuloplasty, a recreation of the LES valve. Its not laparoscopic. Its a complete take down of the Nissen then the new valve is built from the inside of the stomach. Apparently, its a 4 days hospital stay & intense recovery but I am so sick of reflux, my esophagus is burnt from acid. I am ready to sign on.

Has anyone got experience with this surgery?

I read your post and would love to know who the thoracic surgeon is that did your surgery. Also, how did the surgery go for you? How was recovery?

My surgeon is in Celebration, Florida and he is a thoracic surgeon. We have a topic in his forum called "hiatal hernia without the wrap". The procedure is called robotic assisted gastroesophageal valuloplasty. He also does a take down of the Nissen in the same procedure. You do stay in the hospital and return home. I had my procedure one year ago and I feel great. The physician's name is Dr. Farid Gharagozloo. He puts the esophagus back into the stomach and creates a valve between the esophagus and stomach, which closes and opens when you eat. He closes the hiatal hernia with a Vicryl mesh which is absorbed. We have had no side effects except for postoperative inflammation and many of us are off PPI's. We are not restricted with what we eat. He has been in Florida for a year and has done over 500 procedures. This is not a new procedure because Dr. Gee has done them since 2000.

I wasn't sure what a esophix technic was. I looked it up online and it looks like it is a TIF procedure., or LINX I would have considered the that procedure, but it only is good for very small hiatal hernias. There are support groups somewhere, either here or on FB. I did find one on this site. It is a LINX procedure diary.

My surgery was called a Robotic assisted gastroesophageal valvuloplasty. If you get to the point where you need big surgery, you should consider this procedure before having the Nissen wrap.

Thank you Yellow1955 I am doing some deep research as to my options. I had the Nissan and since then I've been having nothing but dysphasia problems. I've had 3 EGD's since my surgery and the last EGD that I had didn't help much. My reflux seems to have come back as well. I am young I know I definitely do not want to deal with this for life.

I did call Dr. Gee's office and got a lot of information on the surgery today. The nurse also spoke with me and gave me all of the details. She said I'd have to have the open surgery because he'd have to do the take down of the Nissen.

Thanks again and I will keep everyone updated on the forum you mentioned.
