Hi, I'm new here. I'm a 52-year-old male. I have had off and on symptoms of a hiatal hernia for several years but it has seldom caused me any problems. I am tall lean and I lift weights, swim and do taekwondo. I have not had to restrict myself in any of these activities due to hiatal hernia symptoms.
The main symptoms I have had are gas pressure in my chest accompanied with irregular heart beating and burping. Generally speaking the burping relieves the gas pressure and heart irregularity.
Like I said this hasn't given me much of a problem that is until recently when about
two months ago when I had what I shall term a taekwondo incident where I had compression to my abdomen and immediately started having the gas, irregular heartbeat and burping. I have also been generally not feeling well.
I have been hoping that the symptoms would go away as they have in the past but they are more persistent this time and I'm afraid surgery may be my only option. I have days where I feel fine but anything I do that is strenuous brings back the symptoms. Even standing in place and flexing my abdominal muscles will bring back the symptoms.
My doctor thinks it is a hiatal hernia and referred me to a gastroenterologist with whom I met yesterday. I don't think I convinced him that I have a hiatal hernia because I don't have acid reflux or heartburn. At any rate I have an upper endoscopy scheduled for next week and I guess we will find out more what's going on.
Other symptoms I have had lately are a feeling of something stuck in my throat and a general aching below my breastbone and I feel bloated most of the time.
I'll add that I generally feel better on a full stomach. I feel lousy with an empty stomach. These symptoms may be more that of something like an ulcer but I don't think abdominal compression will bring on an ulcer.
I would do about
anything to avoid surgery but I can't go on feeling lousy all the time either.
Any comments, thoughts or advice would be appreciated thank you.
