Halfnote, I think the next step is to speak with the doctors and get them to be VERY CLEAR about
the details of your gf's condition. Does she have a hiatal hernia? Is she refluxing and, if so, to what extent? A barium swallow shows reflux better than an endoscopy. Please note that one does not have to have the classic symptoms of "heartburn" in order to reflux. In fact, some individuals reflux for a long time w/o any noticeable symptoms. As far as surgery, that's going to have to be a decision she makes after considering all of the available options. Is she currently on meds? It sounds strange that this surgeon is offering his services for free. It makes me question his level of expertise. If she decides on surgery, make sure you find a reputable surgeon with a lot of experience. Ask how many times s/he has performed the fundoplication. Best of luck to you and feel free to post more questions if you'd like feedback. The people on this site are very
open and helpful.
