I never took PPIs for mine. Researched the side effects and reviews at AskaPatient. I already knew I have low stomach acid. Most older people do. My doctor didn't have the equipment to test my acidity when I requested it. So I didn't think it wise to eliminate acid altogether with odds on that I'm like the majority of older folks with low stomach acid. I read that stomachs churn trying to produce sufficient acid to digest protein and cheese, which take longer to digest. I researched supplements used by others' reviews like this forum. Reviews at Amazon also help decide on what types to try. I found that apple cider vinegar tablets worked best for me because my esophagus could not take the burn from liquid ACV no matter how diluted. The tablets totally knocked out the churning and pain during digestion. Also sped up digestion. I made sure to take the tablets with adequate water to get it past my esophagus and avoid any chance of burning. For the esophagitis I took slippery elm powder dissolved in water, DGL licorice capsules, and mastic gum capsules which worked to soothe and ease swallowing. Also took betaine HCL with digestive enzymes to assist digestion. For night reflux, I took calcium citrate powder dissolved in water at bedtime to tighten the LES and prevent reflux. I also cut sugar and I keep dairy and gluten to a minimum. Can't quite cut the joys of occasional pizza. The relief was almost immediate.
