Hello All ,
Apologies for the long post here !
I am hoping for some reassurance... as am feeling pretty low .
I had the 270 toupet on 1st Feb this year. I am a 39 year old female with 2 young children and I was previously fit and healthy running half marathons My main reason for having this surgery was an 8cm sliding hiatus hernia probably caused by two pregnancies. It was initially diagnosed as gastritis after a bout of acid after a run left me vomiting 'coffee grounds' I.e dried blood, as I had had some acid problems before but only during pregnancy and nothing I would consider a problem really .
Symptoms quickly went away with medication but then returned a few months later and I continued on this on off cycle for 2 years alternating between 40 and 80 mg omeprazole a day. When the sliding hernia was 'down' I was symptom free could eat almost anything and felt great , however when it was back even water gave me acid reflux and regurgitation and the omeprazole did nothing . 2 endoscopes showed a hernia ranging from 5-8 cm and grade 1
Oesophagitis. I also suffered from shortness of breath when the hernia was 'up ' as it pressed onto my chest and was unable to run as this made the regurgitation worse.
I the had all that tests, manometry ,barium swallow etc and came back as a positive candidate for the surgery. My surgeon is very experienced with these operations (done over 1,000) so I was hopeful that as it was almost certainly purely the hernia that was causing my problems it would be a fix .
3 week post surgery after sticking to the diet to the letter I started with a bout of acid regurgitation which gave me a sore throat and lasted a week . I was still on liquids at this point . It lasted a week then almost disappeared . Cue the same thing at 6 weeks which left me hoarse, and then again at about
9 weeks which has now been pretty much constant for about
10 days ... suffice to say I am devastated. I put it down initially to being a little adventurous with foods , and as some people have suggested here the food creating acid in my oesophagus, but would this last for 10 days continuously?
I know that this is ' real ' acid not oesophagus pain as my tongue swells up and scallops when I taste the acid and goes down when the acid isn't present .
I have been back on soft easy to eat foods for the past 10 days , I have eaten no bread or red meat or highly spicy foods at all since the surgery , only had about
3 small glasses of wine ( not all in one go ) or even eaten any chocolate as Easter :-(
Is it even possible that it could have reherniated so soon ? And if not could this continued acid in my mouth be due to my oesophagus still being so inflamed ? I am pretty sure the wraps in place as occasionally things get slightly stuck ,and I have only managed the occasional tiny burp . I Know it's still so early on in my healing it's just my symptoms are so similar to before it frightens me . .....
