Hey all,
I appreciate in advance that my issues are totally rare but it's the big world internet so I'm really hoping some of you can offer me advice.
I suffered with Bulimia for 11 years but have been happy in recovery for 5. During the course of my bulimia I developed what I now know to be called "Rumination Disorder" where I can basically recall my food while I'm still eating or just after I've eaten. Technically it's a voluntary thing but it's become totally subconcious and perhaps quite comforting. I've tried so hard to stop but I'll do a whole day and then have one meal and forget and I'm back there again. I also continue to recall food hours after I've eaten it so it brings up a lot of acid too. This was rectified super easily by my doctor who put me on PPI's 13 years ago - which made the whole rumination process far too easy for me but after all of the various XXX-prazoles/nexium/zoton - almost all of them just stopped working I find myself on a 80mg daily dose and guzzling almost a bottle of Gaviscon a day. I've developed a plethora of food intolerances and I'm convinced I'm not digesting all of my food properly as I also need to take my meds with an enzyme or they may as well be smarties.
So apparently I am a good candidate for the Nissen Fundoplication - if only just to save me from the long term damage of PPI usage that hasn't already happened.
The thing is, when I concentrate and eat bland food, I can curtail this rumination somewhat and that's not a life really. But I also appreciate that this op is no quick-fix. I do CrossFit 6 times a week and I can already see from research that I won't be able to engage in that for a few weeks after the op and I'm not sure if the added complications - gas, burping, surgery etc are better than restricting to a bland diet permanently and possibly staying on the PPI's for another long while. I'm not sure if it would be entirely manageable on Gaviscon, each time I've tried to quit taking PPI's I've done one day and then been totally struck down by the burn the next.
So, my question for people who've had the NF OP is - if you had the option to attempt self-recovery, eating steamed white meat/fish and rice and oatmeal whilst trying to reduce PPI's - still experiencing a bit of pain..hoping that might go but gut feeling is that's unlikley
Or have the operation and go through the recovery process but know that the rumination would be gone (probably)
Which would you chose?
Thanks in advance
