I have an appointment next week to find out if I can have the nissen surgery. Curious, if anyone knows what the results means. I hate to wait till next week to find out. Yes, I know nobody here is a medical professional, but you guys know more than most doctors I have seen. tongue

In case anyone is curious. My history is severe reflux symptoms even on PPI and adjusting diet and sleeping patterns. Worst at night/morning. Lots of chest pain and feeling like food is in my chest, not so much burning anymore.

Upper GI showed significant reflux
EGD showed narrowing of esophagus that I had dilated and other signs of reflux.
No hernias.

Hi rrandal1,

I am curious to know if you have any breathlessness symptoms? I would expect not.

In your results the the UES does not seem to be out of range. Only your LES is a couple point out of normal range.
Can't say what the numbers mean, I have not had this test done.

Did you symptoms progressively increase, or did they just come on and stay the same level?

I haven't had any breathless symptoms. My main symptoms are chest pain and feeling like food doesn't go all the way down or stays in my throat way too long. I'm miserable for an hour or so after every meal no matter how big it is. I have most of those symptoms throughout the day, worse after meals and when laying down.

I'm really scared of surgery. I want to make absolutely sure that I'm a good candidate before I go through with it. I can't tell much from the results, but I think my swallow is okay and not weak. I think that is the main thing they check for?

Before you consent to surgery, make sure you get a second opinion. It's a major surgery that has a difficult recovery and I think of it as a last resort. Make sure your surgeon fully explains what you will experience during and post-surgery and what your limitations may be.

Thanks Sharon. I have talked to two GI doctors and only one surgeon. GI doctors say there isn't anything else they can do to treat me. I don't want to have the surgery, but I don't know if I want to live like this forever either. I'm 38, so I hopefully have many years ahead of me.

They said that GERD has 4 stages. Stage 3 is strictures in your esophagus. Stage 4 is Barretts Esophagus. That is my main reason for considering surgery. My mom died of pancreatic cancer and I don't want any increased risk for anything.
