Experiences with open fundoplication?

Hi all!
After years of suffering with this disease I am finally on the verge of hopefully having surgery!

However, due to my extremely poor esophageal motility my surgeon wants to perform an open partial wrap for better visibility and control to ensure minimal post-op complications with swallowing.

I haven't really read any recovery stories from open fundoplications so if any of you have had one please share your recovery/surgery experience!!

I'm having pretty terrible pre-op anxiety, thoughts about not waking up, dying during surgery or having post-op complications, so I'm trying to find out as much as I can to ease the worries.

How do you figure? Because the choice to make it open is BECAUSE I have poor motility. Is there any research done on open vs. Laporascopic and the effect on motility?

I already am aware that I'm not an ideal candidate for surgery because of my motility issues, as is my surgeon, but since medication is not effective I am running out of options.

It has nothing to do with whether the surgery is done via lap or open, but rather the poor motility. And, it's always good to get a 2nd opinion before any surgery. Make sure you do your research as this is a major surgery and comes with a tough recovery. Everyone is different, but I really didn't feel a lot better until approximately 6-months post surgery and my new self at around 1 year. Recovery can leave you exhausted, I missed 2 months of work.

Thanks for the info! Have considered a second opinion but it's difficult for insurance reasons.
