Hey guys ! I'm scheduled to see a general surgeon on Wednesday for my hiatal hernia! I'm super scared! This will be my first surgery and I'm terrified! I'm worried about pain after surgery, synthoms, and recovery.. I have sick leave for work but how long before I can return ? Any advice is really appreciated! My acid reflux is terrible last night I felt nausea I have cold sweats and no sleep even after taking my prescribed medication!

Since you are having reflux also, why aren't you seeing a gastroenterologist and a thoracic surgeon? This is a bit more than most general surgeons are trained to handle. Most of them. Not all. Definitely I would want to be seeing someone who has a LOT of experience in this area. I suspect you are looking at having a Nissen fundoplication is addition to just a few stitches in the diaphragm to close the hernia.

What type of doctor recommended the general surgeon?
Are you on PPIs? (acid reducers)
Hoe long have you had this reflux?
Is the hernia a simple one or is your stomach stuck up in your chest? (GPEH) Did they even tell you?

I was terrified when I had my surgery too. Ask questions. Take someone with you to take notes because you won't remember everything they tell you. Take a list of your questions. You won't remember everything you want to ask. Hand them the list!

It may help to sleep on a recliner or several pillows.
