Hi, Everyone --
I'm Daniel. 36 yo male, from San Jose, CA. Yesterday, I had a partial laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication. Several months ago, I complained about chronic acid reflux. After an upper GI scope, it was found that I have four 3-5 cm lesions on the interior of my esophagus, and a 5cm hiatal hernia. It was recommended that I have the procedure.
Yesterday, I was feeling pretty well after the surgery. I recovered in the hospital for about 6 hours. I tolerated all the food and water I could take.
Today, however, is a different story. As I've started to pass gas, when I need to belch it turns into dry heaving, which is incredibly scary and painful. There is no pain or discomfort with flatulence. I don't know if I should be concerned or is this to be expected? My surgeon did not mention this to me.
I'm on a clear liquid diet for two more days. My body is pretty weak, but I'm taking as much water as I can to stay as hydrated as I can. I have noticed I can drink very little at one time. I suppose this is normal in the days following the procedure.
Is there anything I should be concerned about? Is this a "typical" recovery pattern? I'm happy to read your thoughts and experiences!
Best,
Daniel
