I was on PPI's for years. It got to the point where medicine didn't help, but I waited too long because my stomach was up through the hernia into my chest and upside down. My surgeon likes to get hernias small, but we all wait until it is very bad. There is also a TIF or LINX procedure to consider.
Look at this site under "hiatal hernia repair without the wrap". I have found several of us who have had the surgery and are doing well without any ill effects, except for some inflammation in the stomach and esophagus. Robotic-assisted gastroesophageal valvuloplasty.
