GERD Attack 48 hours so far - help

Hello reaching out for practical advise please.

My partner has had GERDs for approx 18 months and currently takes Ranitidine 150mg twice a day.

He follows a fairly strict diet now to help himself, but did have a few beers at the weekend and is now pretty much bedridden as he is that sick. He can’t lie down as that simply makes matters worse and is constantly vomiting. He has to try and sleep upright propped up on pillows.

I asked the pharmacist for advise and other than take his medication and some gavisicon not a lot else.

Drinking water seems to make him vomit even more so tried him with a little plain alpro milk and some alpro yogurt to ease his throat as now totally raw and his chest and stocmach feel battered. It didn’t help much but worried he will get dehydrated at this rate!

He tried a little mash potato and plain salmon this evening and this seems to have triggered it all off again and he is vomiting a lot. He is now exhausted and I’ve never seen him this bad.

Apart from GERDs he is a very fit and slim man of 46, probably too slim because of this darn GERDs!

He is now in a lot of pain and I’m worried sick, if anyone has experienced a similar prolonged attack and have some tips on how to ease this I’d be very grateful

Hello, he should go to a doctor to rule out heart issues. After that, you can try different things...First of all, get the doctor to give you zofran, to control vomiting. From there, he might have to try going on a PPI (Prilosec, Nexium, etc.). There are many drugs out there, but if symptoms are severe and not responding to diet, drugs like Ranitidine will not be strong enough to reduce the acid. The pumps need to be shut down with a PPI. If you were to ask me, I would recommend Nexium, because it worked better for me than Prilosec.

Hi Leo, thanks for that I will try and get an emergency doctor appointment today and see if we can get him the Zofran as he is still vomiting and totally wiped out. Definitely time for new drugs. Thank you

I second a visit to the doctor, his symptoms may not be related to GERD. When was the last time he had an endoscopy?

Hi All, thanks for your help earlier. He was given Cyclizine Hydroxhloride 50mg to combat the sickness and this appears to be working which is a step in the right direction!

He has had his meds’ changed to Opeprazole 20mg that he has been on before, but now an increased dose.. One in the morning and one in the evening.

One thing for sure is he will now go tee total which is a bore, but better than four days of hell. It’s such an annoying disease!

Last endoscopy was over a year ago, we shall monitor the next two weeks and if no significant improvement go for another to see if any changes or signs of damage.

Give the medicine some time to work, but if it doesn't, don't be afraid to try another PPI. Some work better than others for different people.
