Impedance 24hr test. What should I know?

Had an upper GI endoscopy which showed GERD LA A and incompetent sphincter. My GI explained to me that I have to undergo a 24-hr impedance test to determine the cause of reflux since I'm on a double dose of Nexium 40mg. He explained all possible results and treatments provided I do this test. What should I know? I read on the net that some clinics allow patients to take PPI while doing the test while others ask patients to stop PPIs and antacids 7 days prior to the procedure. I stopped my meds more than 24hrs prior to the endoscopy and I suffered from reflux symptoms let alone 7 days. What else should I know about this test?

Hi Minnietoty,

Doctors handle prep for the impedance test differently, so you will be given specific instructions. Generally, long acting PPIs are stopped first, but you’re allowed Ranitidine to pick up acid reduction for a while. When that is stopped, antacids are allowed until just before the test.

It’s not the most pleasant test—but it’s not the worst thing either. It’s just 24 hours, and it’s a step toward learning what is going on and how to improve your quality of life. You’ll do fine!

Denise, thank you very much. I was instructed to take my meds normally even the PPI, Nexium as my GI wants to assess whether I get reflux on it or not.

Hi, I had the 24 hour test and had to stop meds for 48 hours and although it was unpleasant I found watching the ph readings on the monitor fascinating as what I was feeling and the reading indicated just how acidic my oesophagus was! Your meds and scenario are the same as mine and I’m 2 days post Fundoplication and travelling quite well! Good luck with it all!

RosieinOz, thank you. Well, it seems my Crohn's got jealous or what. After only 1day on Dexilant, I had to return to Nexium because of severe rectal pain. I can't figure out how to control it esp that my Remicade infusion is still due the week after next.
