Hi, my name is CJ (23yo) it's been quite a while since I last came here, I hope all of you are doing well. I came here for advice on getting a Nissen since I've been suffering from GERD since 2015. I took PPIs for 2 years since 2015 but then stopped as they were causing me adverse side effects after I stopped them I felt great and went to use pepcid for the remainder of 2018 and 2019 but ever since last week my GERD has been getting out of hand and I'm on PPIs again for the mean time. Since I'm moving back to NJ I've been thinking of getting surgery there but first I'm planning on getting insurance first obviously. Anyways just want to know how the much the surgery costs and how you guys went about it I feel like I'm running out of options when it comes to GERD and I don't want to be on PPIs forever so any info is very much appreciated smile

First, you have to make sure that when you get insurance, that it will cover the surgery and what the deductibles and co-pays, co-insurance wwill be. Second, you need to have multiple tests down to see if you are even a candidate for surgery. EGD, barium swallow, manometry, 24-hour pH study, etc. I tell everyone that surgery should be a last resort, and it can be a long, difficult recovery.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and yes I do understand that surgery should be a last resort but so I tried many things to calm down my heartburn to no avail. I have a Hiatal Hernia which causes me great discomfort and I've been trying to find other solutions but so far to me surgery seems to be the best option. I have tried going back on PPIs but so far it gives me bad side effects like nausea and bloating. If you have any other methods to share I would greatly appreciate it.

You were able to control the symptoms in the past, I would start by following a very strict GERD-friendly diet and even losing a few pounds can help. I would take something like O-T-C Pepcid at night, and give it some time. If you are having side effects from one PPI, try another - they all work differently for certain people. I didn't start to feel better until around 6 months post-surgery and my "new" me at around 1 year.

Does a hiatal hernia cause any sudden flare ups by any chance I found it strange that it kind came out of nowhere?

I don't have an answer for that, although I know that a lot of people have a hiatal hernia, but don't experience any symptoms.
