Eustachian tube problems from GERD?

Hi all,

   about a month ago, I started having trouble with my right ear eustachian tube feeling blocked.  It drives me crazy.  My body doesn't seem to tolerate decongestants, so all I use is guaifenesin, drink lots of water, and use a homemade nasal spray.  It was pretty constant for about 10 days, and seemed to improve....but now it's back.  I have no allergy or cold symptoms.  I just read somewhere that sometimes stomach acid can cause this problem.  I always sleep on my left side, and it's my right ear.....so it doesn't make alot of sense, but I know anything's possible.  Have any of you had recurring eustachian tube blockage without any other cold symptoms?  The reason I'm considering GERD as a cause of it, is because my GERD has flared up at about the same time as this ear problem.  Any ideas?  Thanks!

Hi Cathy,

Yes, I've had the symptom which you've described.  I actually went to an ENT doctor because it felt like my hearing was affected.  I also know that when my reflux is particularly bad, I get burning up to my ears--literally.  If you're not taking a PPI, you might want to talk to your doctor about it.

Interesting -- I've had similar symptoms too. I was diagnosed w/ silent acid reflux / Gerd seveal years ago. I started having problems with my ears sometime after that. Certain times of year were worse so I assumed it was allergies. I would also get terrible headaches with the tube blockage. Since last year I've been suffering from the acid reflux but I have not noticed any correlation.

Of course if I mention it to my gastro doctor he'll just look at me like I'm crazy.

Hi everyone,

   I've been taking mucinex (guaifenesin) for the blocked tube and it helps....as long as I keep taking it.  You'd think if it was acid, it would be both ears, and the guaifenesin wouldn't help it......but you never know.

Gosh I hate having my hearing messed up!

I've taken liquid guafenesin for a long time. I stopped taking it when the acid reflux got worse. Does anyone know if the guafenesin has any impact on acid reflux?

I sometimes wondered if it provided any help -- I really couldn't tell sometimes. Other times it seemed to help. BTW, my doctor said I should take the guafenesin.

I've never noticed that it made reflux any worse.
You should look up information on how it is used for Fibromyalgia. There is a doctor who believes that fibromyalgia is caused by a phosphate excretion problem. He believes that by taking guaifenesin (1200-1800mg/day), it lets your phosphate get out of the cells, where it is trapped. Supposedly, it gets rid of alot of acids.....usually through urine. But when you asked that question about reflux....it made me wonder if it, in any way, could cause more acid secretion in your stomach. I have no idea....but you could do a search on that.
I feel the same way about guaifenesin. Sometimes, it has felt like it did nothing for me. But with this blocked eustachian tube, I can hear out of the ear, if I take 1800mg a day, but not if I only take 1200.......and it gets totally bad if I stop it, so it must be doing a little something.
