Hi, I am a long-time sufferer of GERD. Quick rundown, I have had acid reflux on and off for over 20 years. I am now 46. I work out and eat pretty well. I dipped tobacco for around the same number of years. Also have smoked on and off. I was sent for colonoscopy last year and was diagnosed with Barrett’s Esophagus. I have had shortness of breath, put on inhaler after being seen by pulmonologist that diagnosed me with reactive airway disease. I am guessing since they could find any other issues with my lungs. Was also tested and had mild sleep apnea. It was discovered through allergy test that I do have some allergies, but nothing looked extreme. Dust mites and mold that was little above moderate. For around 6 months I had very bad problems breathing. I pushed on with my business that I run and it did improve somewhat with inhalers and more picking up more exercise. I have quit dipping and smoke about half a pack or more a day now.
Over the past 6 weeks I have developed a hoarseness. It has progressed to not being able to speak hardly at all, especially in mornings. I have to talk for awhile before it sounds somewhat normal. During the worst of it, drinking or eating anything feels somewhat hard to do and burns somewhat, but not severe. It feels like there is always a film in my mouth and throat and feels like there is an acid that may be burning my throat but not sure if it’s that there is always mucus around my throat opening. I was sent to ent as it also seems I have postnasal drip. But scans show not enough to do sinus surgery. So, it feels like this may more of a reflux issue but I’m not sure.
Ent said that I have vocal cord damage. He said that there also seems to be something that he seen with scoping my throat with light that is worrisome that may need biopsy if it worsens.
I have been trying to find an alternative to dipping through herbs, nicotine lozenges etc but have discovered that anything that I put in my mouth that melts make me feel like I am having asthma and I will barely be able to speak at all until I clear mucus or acid or whatever it is with salt water and then I still sound sick. I am extremely interested to know if anyone out there has experienced the same or similar as I have been unable to find an answer to this but seems like it would be key to answering what step I take next. This all really kicked into overdrive when last January after gorging myself with New Year's Deserts, I woke up with acid spraying so bad on my throat in felt like someone stuck a hot iron on my throat. It was so bad it closed my throat up and I had severe problems breathing for a while and still do sometimes. Sometimes more than others. Since then, there have been several nights that I woke up unable to breathe with acid spraying but seems my throat has gotten somewhat used to the ton of acid that happens and doesn't swell quite as bad as it did.
Lastly – I have high blood pressure. Not through the roof but always run a little but higher lately higher.
If you ever saw me, you wouldn't think that I have all these issues and it was at first tough for any doc to think anything was that too bad wrong with me so I think this drug out longer than it should have. I have tried to work through it all by many ways and methods seems to maybe have progressed due to chronic laryngitis. I am just trying to narrow this down and it seems like a high correlation with acid reflux/barrets. Anyone have any ideas? The GI suggested surgery for barrets but is this causing these issues or a mixture? I just wish I knew if I was on the right track here or am I going the right with GI surgery. I am also extremely interested in the reason for not being able to chew gum or suck on lozenges etc without losing my voice and/or having asthma symptoms. Thanks for anyone's help in advance
