Nissan Fundoplication and lower esophagus pain

Hi everyone,

I had a fundoplication in Nov. 2004 and was wondering if anyone has had the same problem as me.  Whenever I drink alcohol (Martini's, etc...) I have a terrible pain in my lower esophagus where the surgery occured.  I rarely drink so it isn't a huge problem, but I would like to have a casual one every now and then.

The only guess I have is that the esophagus is closed and the alcohol just sits there (like taking a never-ending shot).

Im looking into the surgery can you brurp etc?

Anyways abouty drinking bro I think once you have the Nissen thats a no no the wrap lasts 5-7 years anyways why would you want to damage what you have..Im only 27 and cant drink eithier I think thats one of the biggest reason I hate gerd is not being able to drink..Maybe im wrong you can drink with Nissen ask your G.I?

Umm....

First of all, the wrap lasts for life. Drinking shouldn't damage the wrap at all. For some people, drinking can cause reflux, but if anything, you SHOULD be able to drink after the surgery. I never had reflux (so to speak). I had a problem vomiting and they couldn't figure out why so they said this was the best solution - no, I am not bulimic :)

The question isn't really whether or not I can drink - but as to why it hurts so bad. I never really drank before the surgery and never really do now. I might have one drink per month, if that.

Sorry,but your wrong about the surgery lasting life long..Umm they say it can last up to 10 years,but it skips,and alot of people have to have it redone etc.Ive tried digging up all the facts I can,and am going for testing for surgery options.Don't get me wrong the surgery can be great,and last a long time..

As far as your reflux problem,alot diffrent than mine,I have the classic symptoms they suck bad..

Drinking me I miss it,ive heard not to drink on the surgery,but than again it would be tempting.I guess I would ask the surgeon about that..I know of a great heartburn site that pretty much deals with people that have the nissen,and gerd..

I wish I could anwser your questions better,All I know is from what ive been told,and medical facts ive read about it lasting..Drinking really don't know..goggle heartburn-help forum like that great place for anwsers.Sorry I couldnt help and people dont respond here just view??

I have had this surgery and was not told how long it would last. But then I didn't ask either. I do have an ocassional adult beverage. I do not get any pain after I drink. I di dnot have any bad side effects from this surgery. If fact, it was the easiest surgery i had ever had. I had to be on a pudding, smooth foods for about 4-6 weeks. Yes, you do get tired of pudding.

One side effect my surgeon did tell me about the surgery is that you pass more gas. OH, was he ever right on that one. Don't walk behind me in walmart, I can get jet propelled!!! I am terrified to throw up, so I will do anything to keep from getting to that point of nauseau (sp). I also burp more. I was always a big burper anyway. I tend to swallow alot of air when I eat. I don't drink alot of carbonated drinks either.

I think the test I had to have before the surgery, with the tube down my nose, is worse than the surgery. I have been scoped twice since the surgery and everything is fine with my wrap. Good luck.
