I had the surgery about
two years ago. Had a bad gallbladder and the surgeon knew about
my Gerd so he offered to fix it while he was in there. Going through the 24 hour ph study prior to surgery was not fun. The surgery wasn't too bad but the bloating afterwards was pretty bad. Eating was limited to liquid and soft foods for a while, but got better. My shoulders hurt for weeks afterwards. about
two months or so after surgery, the pain behind my breastbone returned. The surgeon thought maybe I aggrivated the area becasue I exercise a lot. It went away, then about
1 year after the surgery the pain came back, the same pain that the Gallbladder and Acid Reflux surgery was supposed to cure. We went through all the tests again including barium swallow, upper GI sonogram, endocopy, and the ph study. Everything looked fine, his work on my esophogus and upper stomach was in tact, and the ph study showed absolutely no acid problem. Go figure. It went away in a couple of weeks.
It's been close to two years now, and last week my GERD came back. I'm pretty sure its acid because it has started to bother my voice box. I have a bubble in my throat, pain, and burning in my chest. Stress has been a real problem lately so maybe that brought it on. I was also taking motrin fairly regularly for TMJ pain, was up to 3 large cups of coffea each morning, and plenty of chocalate, and other tasty food. I guess even after the surgery I can't get away with that.
Two 40 mg of Nexium each day hasn't seemed to help. I've noticed that I sort of dwell on the GERD all day and my wife sais I seem distant. It is pretty weird and it seems my mood affects the GERD and visa versa.
