Sure hope the following can help some of you, I know what you're going thru. I must say though that to go on this diet, you really have to give up alot. I went strictly alkaline since I saw that drugs for GERD did not help me. I think it's worth it for a while to feel better, and then you can wean yourself back to some regular foods.
Alkaline Diet: Foods With Alkaline Ash When you start researching Alkaline foods, keep in mind that you have GERD. There will be some conflicting foods listed on different sites, some may be listed as alkaline and on other sites as acid.
Thru an unfortunate series of events, I sort of gave myself GERD. I had tripped in my home and hurt my left side, took Advil mostly at night so I could sleep (never knew that you should stay upright for at least 1/2 an hour after taking ibuprofen/aspirin) and for almost 2 months slept only on my right side (this will explain why it's so important to sleep mostly on your LEFT side) - How To Prevent Nighttime Heartburn / Acid Reflux
My symptoms at first were nausea and incredible dizziness, I never had acid reflux or pain in esophagus. I was sent for many tests including a brain MRI. No one ever suspected GERD since I'm not really overweight and was always careful with foods I ate. When the "knot in throat" (globuous) feeling started, I went for an endoscopy and GERD was diagnosed. My gastroenterologist put me on Prilosec for one month (40mgs. morning and 40 mgs. evening). Toward the end of the month I started getting the same symtoms and he told me to take Zantac. I got so dizzy from the drug, that I decided to take care of it naturally.
After alot of research on many sites, including reading this board, I decided to go on an alkaline diet and take some natural products. I have been getting my vitamins from (I'm not on their payroll!) for more than 20 yrs. Puritan's Pride - Discount Priced Vitamins and Nutritional Supplements, visit Puritan.com - Puritans Pride and was able to order DGL licorice from them (the part of the licorice that causes high blood pressure is eliminated) at a good price.
I take 3 DGL tablets (they have to be dissolved with saliva) 20 minutes before I eat - 3 times a day and 2 before I go to sleep.
I also drink some Aloe Vera (you can also get it at Puritan Pride), acidophilous (refrigerate after opening), multiple vitamin, B-100, calcium with magnesium, helps absorb acid (I like the Twinlab Calcium Citrate Plus Magnesium -- 250 Capsules - Vitacost brand, it's quickly absorbed in system and is not constipating).
After eating I chew some gum - non mint, cinnamon one is good since cinnamon is alkaline in stomach (Trident is a brand sweetened with Xylitol).
My basic diet right now (have been on it for 2 weeks and no longer have nausea and dizziness but I do feel a slight soreness in my esophagus, but symptoms are so much better than they were) is variations of the following:
I am off all sugar, coffee, tea, alcohol, meat, fish, pasta, rice, wheat products
Breakfast - Puffed millet with some fruit (either watermelon or cantalope)For snacks - dried figs/dates/almonds/raisins/apricots (I get everything organic without sulphur)
Lunch/Dinner - Quinoa, steamed broccoli/kale/carrots/soy beans/low fat tofu/sweet potato/red beets/celery/avocado
I sleep with my head and torso elevated and try to sleep as much as possible on my LEFT side.
I wish you all good health and I'll be happy to post more information in the future.
