Has anyone had Barretts Osophagus,I have it and dont know much about it.Has anyone acually got cancer from this? The Doctor is keeping an eye on mine because i had Breast Cancer.Any info. would be appreciated Tammy

Hi Tammy,

I had a friend who had Barrets and she never got cancer and her doctor told her that her esophagus looked like a dried up snake on the road, so I think you can go pretty long as long as you try to keep from anymore damage. 

Anyway, she opted for the fundo surgery because she couldn't even drink a glass of water without reflux.  After the surgery, her esophagus came back to 90% normal and she's fine today, eats whatever she wants.  

I really hope you get some relief.

Tammy, I was diagnosed as having a hiatal hernia and barretts before I was 30 years old. The only treatment that I had was pepcid. I developed cancer when I was 59.  I beleive that with the proper treatment I would not gotten cancer.

Your doctor seems to be very good so I think you will be o.k. I had an esophagectomy in Jan. 2003 and am now cancer free........Dave

How long have you had symptoms of reflux and did you know that you had it? Were you taking drugs or PPI's for reflux? I've noticed a lot of people on this site, including myself, who are trying to get off the drugs because they feel better without them, but I'm wondering if this is wise considering that some people don't even feel the symptoms until the damage is done, like Barrets. Some docs say that 50% of people don't even have symptoms but they have reflux.

sillylilly, it's interesting what you say. Because my primary doc did say that some people with Barrette's have no symptoms, yet there are people with vigorous reflux (like me) who have normal esophagrams.  interesting...

Sillylilly,I had chemo for Breast Cancer last year and thats when my acid reflux started.I dont think its a good idea for someone to go off their medication if they have had any acid reflux.the doctor told me that my meds will help with acid reflux but it wont cure Barretts,so people if you can prevent this do everything you can to do it.
