I have noticed on many discussion boards that many people go to an ENT for GERD instead of GI.  What is your opinion on this....I am not happy with my GI doc and want to switch.  My GERD symptoms are not in my throat very much, just occastionally if I eat too much carb, I will feel a lump in my throat.  Doesn't usually last very long.

Well, I went to an ENT who wasn't any help at all and told me to go to a GI for this problem (even though I DO have throat problems due to this!)...Since my throat problems are due to the GI, he said he wouldn't be of any help...

But sillylilly, I thought you were feeling better now that you found out it was a bile problem (didn't you say that with zelnorm the prevacid works fine now?)?

Yes, I would say my symptoms are better...nothing works everyday the same.  Maybe I'm expecting that the medicine will work perfectly.  I've talked to so many people that say they don't have any heartburn or reflux with these medications but I can't say that.  Plus, I don't want to stay on this medication forever because I experience other side effects that bothers me but I won't go into all of that.  It's just my body and the way I react to these meds.   

On my last visit to my GI doc, my doc was rather abrupt and unsympathetic.  I just want someone who will listen to me sincerely.  I want to have the surgery within this year sometime and he said no, so I'll probably have to get a different doctor.

sillylilly, was your GI doctor mean in general?  Or are you just unhappy that he won't let you have the surgery?  Because my primary doctor is very good and caring and she doesn't want me to have the surgery (she says it is such a  complicated procedure that it is best to avoid it).

You've heard of many others who are getting relief from these medications?  You must not mean on this forum, I gather.  Because all I hear is of people who can't seem to get better (like me).

I personally know a couple people who say the meds completely take care of heartburn and on this board and others there are people who say the meds work completely. They don't stay on the board because they get better and don't write anymore.

I personally know two people who have had the surgery and it has worked beautifully for them. My doc told me the surgery doesn't work very well for people when the medication doesn't work for them. I don't believe that because both of my friends had the surgery because one was so bad that her esophagus was really ruined and the other had hers because she was having breakthrough acid even on the medication. I feel like I'm having breakthrough acid at times and it's just a matter of time before I will need the surgery. I can tell because I have acid burns on my tongue. My doc said he would scope me again in five years...well, I think that's too long too wait.

sillylilly, did the surgery work for your 2 friends?

Also, it doesn't make sense to me that the surgery doesn't work well for people who don't have the medication work for them, because i always hear and read that surgery is for when the medications DON'T work...

Can you do PH-testing while on medication, to find out if you indeed have acid still coming up?

Yes, the surgery worked for both of my friends. One friend had hers 5 years ago and the other was 10 years ago. I know that some people have trouble with this surgery but many people also do well with it.

I will have to find another doctor who is willing to work with me and have the testing.

sillylilly, the doctor is not letting you even get PH-tested?  That doesn't make sense!  I even went to the meanest doctor on the planet and even he was going to let me get PH-tested.  Yes, you should find another doctor then...
