How serious is GERD

So the medicine I was prescribe is slightly helping so I think my doctor was right in that he thinks I have GERD (been having sharp shooting (zap like) chest pains) I have been doing more reading on it and it sounds very serious. Is this a life long disease? Also, he may give me an endo to be sure this is what I have. Is this painful? Are their other tests to confirm GERD?

The endoscopy is not at all painful and very worthwhile. They would normally take a biopsy (while they do it) to rule out anything sinister as well.
Do you have any symptoms other than the chest pains? For e.g., overproduction of saliva (water mouth) or heartburn?

Is it lifelong? - I sure as hell hope it isn't, but I'm not controlling most of my symptoms at present.

Thanks for your reply. I do not have other symptoms aside from some gas. I never get heartburn and rarely acid reflux. The medicine I am on seems to have dulled down the sharp shooting pains, which tend to come more at night when I am sleeping. I am going in for my follow up tomorrow. Thanks again for your response!
