I was reading some information re: Irritable Bowel Syndrome and GERD and wanted to pass it on.
This article said that IBS and GERD seem to run hand-in-hand, but most people tend to treat the GERD first instead of the IBS. It went on to explain that if you treat the IBS symptoms, the GERD will sometimes correct itself.
Well, I thought it did seem logical, so I have been following a diet to help my IBS (which is chronic constipation). It suggests getting between 25 to 35 grams of fiber a day, as well as eating less red meat - more chicken & fish, drinking plenty of water, avoiding or really limiting caffeine, alcohol & chocolate.
The first three days I had stomach rumblings (and a really good cleaning out - sorry for being graphic), but no heartburn. I have been doing this for a week and a half and I am so surprised at how I feel. No heartburn/reflux, the lump in my throat is almost non existent, and I have more energy than I have had in months.
I continue to take my 20 mgs. of Prilosec at lunchtime (just picked that time - it works for me).
I'm sure it is really too soon to tell if it will work in the long run, but wanted to pass this info on to others if it can be of help!
