Acid Reflux and GERD?

Is there a difference between Acid Reflux and GERD? Or are they the same thing just called differently?  If they are different, does acid reflux graduate into GERD if it's severe enough? I'm just now learning about this because I think I may be having this trouble for a while and I figured I would start my education!  :-)

Hi there Sherry... To answer your question, yes, there is a difference between acid reflux and GERD. I am going to give you the definitions of each... Acid reflux is the condition in which stomach acid flows back (refluxes) into your esophagus. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a chronic condition where you have ongoing symptoms, like heartburn that occurs two or more times a week, or damage to the esophagus because of continual acid reflux. GERD is also called acid reflux disease. So, to answer your question of acid reflux graduating into GERD, yes, in a way, you could say that, since GERD can actually be caused from the acid reflux. Are you getting tested for anything right now, or are you just starting to have symptoms, or what? Wishing you all the best.

I started getting symptoms about 6 months ago. So I brought them up to my GI and he said that it sounds like acid reflux. I never had the burning feeling in the throat - maybe a lot of post nasal drip at night though and clearing of the throat, the painful lump feeling in the chest, nausea and stomach pain. He put me on Prilosec otc and it took care of the problem within 3 days. I very rarely have difficulty anymore since being on Prilosec maybe occasional evening burn which Tums relieves. My GI did say that if it persists (breakthru heartburn), especially the nausea (which I get frequently), that he is going to do something - he didn't say what though.

Hey Sherry...no problem! I am glad you are finding relief with the OTC Prilosec. I hope you don't have any more issues with the heartburn and such, but you know we are here for you if you should need anything. Wishing you all the best!
