Psoriasis Light treatment flareup?

Hello all,

I have had psoriasis for about 10 years. Small patches on my legs and my elbows, and then about six months ago I started having a mild flare up so I went to the dermatologist.

He put me on the light treatment and said it would take 8 treatments to show results and 20 treatments to be fixed.

On the third treatment, they upped the power by 15%. Within 24 hours, I had psoriasis all over my arms and my legs. Within 72 hours, it was on my torso, my back, and the tops of my feet and hands.

I went for a follow up and they said It was "guttate" psoriasis and that it sometimes happens due to a viral infection that you might not know you have.....

Has anyone heard of this? I'm almost embarassed to be seen in public...

Hi pillowpants & welcome to Healing Well. I looked online at WebMD about guttate because its been awhile & I could not remember which one it was. Please go to WebMD & read their article. The reason I say this is, they say a bacterial infection can cause an outbreak, not a viral!! They also listed some treatment options & light therapy is one of them.

I have several forms of psoriasis & have had a lot of treatments for it. I know what you mean about being embarrassed to go out in public. I have had outbreaks on my face & hands & I looked dirty. It looked like I had mud on me.

I plan to go online to the Mayo Clinic & read more about this. You really have to be careful what you read on the web, too much incorrect info out there.



I just checked the Mayo Clinic's site & they did state that both a bacterial infection & a viral infection such as someone with HIV can cause an outbreak. Their site goes into much more detail than WebMd.

Just came across this thread. I had a breakout of guttate psoriasis a couple of years ago after being prescribed Amoxicillian for a bacterial infection. Saw a dermatologist who determined it was caused by an allergic reaction to the Amoxicillian. Now Amoxicillian is on my list of medication allergies.

I've never guttate psoriasis but otherwise I do have psoriasis and my dermo always prescribes me steroid plasters which burn it out plus because of my Lupus.
