Hi there!

Does anyone out there have nail psoriasis?

After having affected nails for most of my life (I am 27 years old), the last dermatologist diagnosed me with "twenty nail dystrophy". I am not trying to argue this, but my "research" shows no common traits with those who have twenty nail dystrophy. The nails look totally different.

I recently came across information on nail psoriasis. I have all the "symptoms" and my nails look very similar to those I have seen with nail psoriasis. I also saw mention of psoriatic arthritis, which could definitely explain the stiffness and aching in my hands/fingers, especially in the morning.

I plan on asking my doctor for a referral to a psoriasis specialists in the near future, to see what they think.

I just feel like I am the ONLY person out there who has this problem. It's not only embarrassing (more so when I was younger), unsightly (gross), and annoying, but now it's just plain ol' painful.

I haven't found much hope in the way of treatments, but wondered if anyone out there has tried anything.

Also, I do not have skin psoriasis. My nails are the only thing affected. My father also had "funny" nails (not as severe as mine), and what I would guess was psoratic arthritis. His fingers were a little swollen at the joints and very "crooked". Unfortunately, he never had that particular issue looked at by a doctor, and has since passed away (from cancer), so I am not 100% sure on his hand/finger condition.

I have psoriatic nails. And they just look like small pits in the nail about needle point size, accompanied by receding cuticles

Hi Noolita, I too have it on my nails and so far nothing has worked for this either. It gets so disgusting looking at times. You would think with all the different meds available today they could have something to help with this....Susie

    I too have the nail psoriasis. And i didn't go to the doctor about it or my psoriasis for a long time. Just mainly cause i to was embarrassed about it. The nails on my big toes are raised and thicker then on any toes. And i also have the pits and the funny lines and thick fingernails too. I am a woman so i can paint them to hide the ugly part of them. For the longest time i thought that is was just a nail fungus. The worst part for me is what they call oiling of the nail. Where it looks like a spot on your nail. Well that is very painful. It feels like an ingrown toenail. I know when i took Humira and methotrexate together it helped me out alot. It didn't cure it but it helped. I hope this helps.

I don't have answers either for the nails. I wish someone would come along one of these days and be able to tell us something good for it too.

I have nail psoriasis been misdiagnosed for years doctor after doctor test after test.

After years of treatments found Neoral worked for me (psyclosporin).

It slows the Immune system down.

Oh gosh...I was diagnosed last year with psoriasis of the nails.I suffered for several years with doctors putting me on antibiotics,trying all kinds of "home" cures..nothing seemed to work..sun seemed to make it somewhat better..but I tell you what,once it starts flaring up,its a real pain to get in control.The nails look like hammered brass,,pitted...the surrounding finger tissue swells,gets all red,and hurts like heck.Its gross.My nails look deformed on some fingers.I guess they are!!!Does anyone notice though an "off" coloring to their nailbeds?Mine look kind of blue at the bottom,whitish in the middle,and then a red streak going straight across????

Hi Peachy and welcome to the forum. Did a dermatologist diagnose you or was it your PCP? If you are suspecting PA you really should get in with a specialist. I noticed the member above you gave the name of a medication that worked well on her nails, may be something for you to consider.

I have been reading all the post but no one has said much about severe scalp psoriasis and that is my biggest problem. Does anyone have and suggestions on what they may have tried and helped them? I do have it on my right elbow down to writs and a very small patch on left elbow and had it really bad on both shins for months and then all of a sudden it went away but the scalp is the worse. I am open to suggestions. Yes i do have psoriatic arthritis to the point i have had to have my right knee replaced and the left needs done too. i have some pitting in my nails but also have arthritis of hands,

I get it in my hairline and I have been told that coal tar based shampoos works sometimes. Most people complained they did not like the smell of the shampoo and quit using it for that reason. I have not ever used any so I really do not know. Have you asked your dermatologist for any ideas as to what you can use on your hair? Please let me know if you hear of anything....Susie
