  I have OA, but I will not take the prescription medications due to the side effects.. they even say in the TV commercials that there is a risk for some cancers. 

  No thank you to this.  My question is what about the over the counter NSAIDs duch as Advil and Aleve.  They say that they will cause liver and kidney damage. They do help me with the pain but again it kicks up the anxiety as to what I am doing to my body.  Does anyone have any answers?

Hey there, how are you ?  I do not take NSAIDs as I have GERD.  I just live with the discomfort for now.  I am not nearly as uncomfortable as so many of you are.

Check with your Dr. re the benefit of using NSAIDs versus the chances of the side effects.

Hi, Annie,

I used to take a lot of Motrin, but it tore up my stomach. I can't take NSAIDs anymore.  I take Tramadol and Soma every day for pain. I cannot function without it.  When I get a bad flare, I take prednisone.  I have severe osteoarthritis, so I have to take meds, but I certainly appreciate you caution re: side effects. I also have torn cartilage in my hip, so that is another issue I have to deal with.  Have you tried the anti-inflammatory diet?  Many people say it does help. I also use icy hot roll on when the pain pills don't do the job well enough. I know it only deadens the nerve endings, but I don't care. LOL  It does help w/some of the pain.

  Thanks for the reply's.  I use Bio Freeze most of the time for pain.  It works for a while.  Wish there were medications out there for us that didn't cause more problems than they cure.  Never heard of the antii-inflamatory diet.

Have you tried Voltarin gel? It's a pain medicine that you rub on your achy joints.

Anti-inflammatory Diet :

Choose fresh foods more often and choose fewer heavily processed foods.

Here are some tips:

For breakfast, try oatmeal served with fresh berries and walnuts.
Snack on whole fruits, nuts, seeds, and fresh vegetables instead of cookies and candy.
Eat more fish and less fatty red meat.
Cook with olive oil and canola oil.
Try a tofu stir-fry or scramble.
Have a salad with lots of fresh vegetables as your meal.
Stay away from deep-fried foods; bake, broil, poach or stir-fry instead.
Choose dark green or brightly colored vegetables as side dishes -- they should fill half your dinner plate.

Maintaining a healthy weight also appears to be helpful for reducing pain and inflammation.

HI, i was taking Naproxen, the side affects for me was feeling very bloated, i put on a bit of weight and i had constipation for ages.
