my mom and osteoarthritis

Hi, my mom was recently diagnosed with osteoarthritis. She is in alot of pain every day. She has has steriod shots, been on steriods and it helped but once she was off it the pain came back. She can't take too much advil because she has high blood pressure and that tends to raise it. Is it normal for her to be in pain like that every day? She is in alot of pain when she sleeps too. What else can she do to relieve the pain? Thank you!

Arthritis can definitely cause chronic pain. Sometimes heat or cold will help - you just have to experiment to see what works. In my case I take Mobic (meloxicam) as my maintenance medication, take tylenol arthritis if I still have pain, and for really severe pain (usually at night) I can take Ultram. Meloxicam and Ultram are prescribed by my rheumatologist.

I also find that gentle exercise with light weights and resistance helps. It strengthens the muscles that support the joints. Your mom might benefit from seeing a physical therapist for a prescribed exercise program.

I've been suffering from osteoarthritis for 8 years now. Been taking Jointsnknees for a year now. I also take turmeric pills long with this.

I just read your post re your moms arthritis, and first of all, I truly admire you for trying to help your mom. I just had my left hip replaced because of the ravages of arthritis, so I know what she means. Like all the other posters say, different things work differently for all people so she has to find a good Dr. to help her out. Both my wife and I suffer from arthritis, my wife has sojourners disease and has flare ups of shingles.

I am totally convinced that much of all that has happened to us happened because of stress. We lost our daughter a little over a year ago at 33 years old, and have dealt with two kids that were using illegal narcotics for about 13 years.

Stress is the killer. Get your mom a spa pass, tell her to drink a lot of good water, and help her all you can. My sister goes to Yoga and swears by it, but that's something that you have to work up to gradually.

All pills have some kind of payback. There is simply no free lunch when it comes to medication, and the more relief it gives, it seems like the more you have to pay. The more she can keep active, and keep her stress levels down, the better.

I know this isn't much help, but its all I have for now.
